Mars Catalyst Program Director, Education, Cedric Bachellerie moderated a panel in Cascais, Portugal for the Horasis Global Meeting. Launched in 2016, the Horasis Global Meeting is one of the world’s foremost gatherings of business leaders who interact with key government officials and eminent thought-leaders. The meetings are held to advance solutions to the most critical challenges facing corporations today. This year’s theme was ‘Inspiring our Future’.

The topic of the Economics of Mutuality panel was “Be inspired – Mutuality”.  The panel included Carrie Rich, CEO of the Global Good Fund, Heaven Bereket, Co-Founder of BaoBabFund, Giulio Boccaletti, Chief Strategy Officer at The Nature Conservancy and Robert Mantse, Vice-Chairman of M2 Capital Partners.

The panelists illustrated their common purpose for mutuality in business with concrete examples, spanning from the price of water in New York City, to locally-produced bean-to-bar chocolate in Cote d’Ivoire, and mining in Bolivia. Members of the audience were highly engaged and contributed more first-hand examples from the wine industry in Argentina and food in Mozambique.

Two topics were more deeply debated:

  • The role of uncommon collaborations in creating breakthroughs that serve business, society and the environment. In particular, collaborations that bridge willing businesses with public sector institutions in pursuit of common good solutions.

  • The need for evolving and educating the world of management and accounting, so that a more complete approach to performance is visible to decision makers. During that debate, consensus was reached that it’s urgent for companies to respond to the Millennial’s growing expression of their consumer and citizen powers.
